Pair of Neoclassical Style Bronze Andirons of Oil Lamp Form with Ring Finials. England. Circa 1960.

This pair of neoclassical style bronze andirons draws its formal vocabulary from one of the most enduring motifs of the neoclassical period: the antique oil lamp or cassolette. Each upright is cast in the likeness of a classical lamp — a wide, shallow bowl of generous proportions resting on a moulded circular base, from which rises a slender tapering neck surmounted by an open circular ring. The ring finial, a motif closely associated with English Regency design and its French Empire counterpart, lends the piece both an architectural clarity and a delicacy of outline. The paired log rest bars, in plain iron, extend horizontally from the base of each upright with characteristic simplicity.

The casting is of good quality, the classical forms rendered with appropriate softness and weight. The polished gilded bronze finish gives the set a warm, aristocratic character consistent with its period sources: the antique oil lamp had been a central motif of neoclassical design since Robert Adam in England and Percier and Fontaine in France introduced it as a decorative vocabulary in the late eighteenth century.

Dating to circa 1960, this pair reflects the sustained interest in the neoclassical aesthetic that characterised high-quality British decorative metalwork of the mid-twentieth century, when the forms of the Regency period enjoyed a renewed prestige in both residential and country house interiors.
