PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This elegant pair of white lacquered wood faux-bamboo armchairs is characteristic of a refined style that enjoyed great favour in France in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly through Maison Jansen, which popularised its use in the most discerning interiors. The faux-bamboo in turned and lacquered wood — imitating natural bamboo through simulated nodes and finely worked profiles — is here executed in white lacquer, a colour that highlights the precision of the design and lends the chairs a visual lightness and timeless elegance.

Maison Jansen, the great ambassador of the faux-bamboo style in the twentieth century, transmitted to many French ateliers the codes of this decorative vocabulary inherited from eighteenth-century chinoiserie. From the late nineteenth century onwards, bamboo-style furniture experienced a European renaissance stimulated by Far Eastern imports and the taste for the exotic. In the twentieth century, Jansen and the great decorators — Billy Baldwin, David Hicks, Henri Samuel — made it a preferred motif, available in bronze, brass, or lacquered wood according to commission.

This pair of armchairs presents in fine overall condition. They may be used as is or reupholstered in a fabric of your choice. Their refined design and luminous white lacquer make them particularly suited to a baroque or decorative interior — in a drawing room, bedroom, or boudoir.
