PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This charming wine bottle decanting basket is crafted in silver-plated metal wire woven in a precise diagonal basketweave characteristic of the finest French table silverware of the Belle Époque. The oval body cradles a standard wine bottle at a reclined angle, allowing the contents to be poured slowly and steadily without disturbing the sediment — an essential procedure for aged Bordeaux and Burgundy wines that formed a central ritual of the French dining table. The tall arched handle, formed from twisted wire, rises above the basket to provide a comfortable grip for carrying and tilting.

The décantoir à bouteilles was a well-established accessory of the French bourgeois table from the second half of the nineteenth century onward, produced by silver-plating workshops in Paris and the provinces in models ranging from the plain to the elaborately ornate. The woven wire variant — lighter and more artisanal than pressed or cast silver pieces — was particularly valued for its combination of functional elegance and crafted charm. The diagonal basketweave echoes the wicker and osier traditions of French rural craft, here translated into a refined metal object for the service of fine wine.

The circa 1900 date is consistent with the quality of the wire, the style of the weave, and the looped wire handle — all features found in the best French wire silverware of the Belle Époque and early twentieth century. The silver plating, now naturally oxidised to a warm antique tone, lends the basket a dignified patina entirely suited to a piece of this age and character.

In good vintage condition. The wire weave is intact and the handle is secure. A functional and beautiful piece of Belle Époque wine service silverware, equally suited to use at table or display as a collector's item.
