Silver-Plated Twisted Wire Bottle Rack and Carrier, France, circa 1950

This inventive bottle carrier belongs to a tradition of French functional metalwork in which the practical and the decorative are pursued with equal seriousness. Constructed from silver-plated twisted wire — the spiralling rod giving the piece its characteristic visual rhythm — the carrier is designed to hold bottles in two orientations simultaneously: upright in a series of circular ring cradles at the base, and reclined in the angled frame above. This dual functionality makes it equally useful for cellaring, serving, and decorative display.

The construction is essentially architectural in its logic: ring elements form the bottle compartments, while linear rods define the frame and provide the structural skeleton. A slender vertical carrying handle rises from the upper frame, and the whole stands on small ball-tipped feet that lift it cleanly from the surface and add a note of decorative refinement.
