PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Cast in patinated bronze of remarkable quality, this six-light Empire chandelier of circa 1900 deploys the full grandeur of the Napoleonic decorative vocabulary with authority and conviction. Six candle-arms of classical section radiate from a central column whose surfaces are enriched with chased royal eagle heads — the supreme heraldic emblem of the First and Second Empires — modelled with sharp, assertive detail. A torch-shaped flame element reinforces the martial and triumphal character that distinguished Empire lighting from all other French styles. At 63.5 cm in diameter and 92 cm in height, the chandelier commands space with the confidence appropriate to its imposing iconographic programme.

The Empire style, codified between approximately 1804 and 1814 under the direction of architects Charles Percier and Pierre-François Léonard Fontaine, represented a total and deliberate transformation of the French decorative arts in the image of imperial Rome and Egypt. Among the most powerful motifs in this programme was the eagle — the bird of Jupiter, the standard of the Roman legions and Napoleon’s chosen emblem — which appeared on furniture mounts, drapery hardware, carriage fittings and lighting fixtures throughout the imperial period. The revival of the Empire style in the Belle Époque, fuelled by nostalgia for the Napoleonic era, produced pieces of great technical accomplishment; the bronziers of the Third Republic were heirs to a century of continuous metalworking tradition, and their interpretations of the canon frequently rivalled the originals in quality of casting and chasing.

This chandelier presents in fine condition for its age, the patinated bronze retaining its characteristic deep, warm tone. The combination of eagle-head ornament, flame finial and six-arm disposition makes this a particularly refined and iconographically complete example of Empire revival lighting. It would be superbly housed in a library, a formal dining room or a vestibule furnished in the Empire or early neoclassical manner, bringing to any such interior the authoritative grandeur of the Napoleonic decorative ideal.
