PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Fashioned in the form of a hot-air balloon — that most characteristically French of symbols — this patinated metal chandelier with crystal pendants from circa 1940 exemplifies the wit and invention that distinguished the finest French lighting design of the Art Déco period. The balloon canopy, worked in delicately patinated metal, swells with the characteristically inflated silhouette that has been a beloved form in French decorative arts since the triumphal flights of the Montgolfier brothers in 1783. From its lower periphery, faceted crystal drops hang in glistening curtains, transforming a fanciful architectural form into a source of shimmering, refractive light.

The montgolfière form in the decorative arts traces directly to 19 September 1783, when Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier staged the first manned hot-air balloon ascent before the assembled court at Versailles, instantaneously captivating the French imagination. Within months, the balloon motif had invaded every medium of the decorative arts, from Sèvres porcelain and Aubusson tapestries to bronze mounts, wallpapers and lighting fixtures. It never entirely left French design: the Art Déco period in particular witnessed a revival of the montgolfière chandelier, whose rounded form aligned naturally with the volumetric, almost sculptural aesthetic that French designers of the 1930s favoured for interior lighting. The combination of patinated metal and crystal was the signature material palette of the most accomplished French ateliers of the interwar period.

This example presents in charming condition, its patinated metal surfaces retaining the characteristic warm, aged tone that no modern reproduction can successfully imitate. The compact dimensions — 43 cm in diameter, 54 cm in height — make it particularly versatile: ideal for a bedroom, a dressing room or a small sitting room where its fanciful silhouette and sparkling crystal drops can be fully appreciated. A rare and delightful piece that embodies the playful sophistication of French Art Déco at its most inventive.
