PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
While the Art Nouveau movement in France is most frequently associated with the celebrated workshops of Nancy and the grand Parisian ateliers, the style found fertile ground across the country’s northern industrial regions as well. Roubaix, enriched by its booming textile industry in the late nineteenth century, nurtured a cultured bourgeoisie with sophisticated tastes in interior furnishing. Among the cabinetmakers who served this clientele, the firm of De Beyne produced furniture of quality that combined the organic, sinuous vocabulary of Art Nouveau with the robust standards of northern French craftsmanship.
This curved commode bears the De Beyne stamp and exemplifies the style in its most accomplished expression. The gently bowed form — 118 centimetres wide and 87 centimetres tall — gives the piece its fluid, organic quality, while the ebonized finish provides the dark, mysterious ground against which the bronze mounts glow warmly. A marble top crowns the composition, adding a note of cool luxury to the ensemble.
Stamped provincial Art Nouveau furniture has attracted considerable collector attention in recent years, as appreciation has broadened beyond the canonical signatures of the Nancy School and Paris. Pieces attributable to documented regional workshops such as De Beyne, bearing their maker’s stamp, offer both aesthetic distinction and the documentary certainty that collectors of the period prize.
