PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

An octagonal coffee table of confident mid-century design, its tabletop veneered in richly figured burr walnut and bordered by a brass gallery rail of slender section. The octagonal form is framed and defined by polished brass edge strips that follow the perimeter of the top, their warm metallic glint playing against the swirling dark grain of the walnut in a dialogue of contrasting textures that is the hallmark of the finest French furniture of the 1970s. The whole rests on a brass-mounted base of tapering square legs joined by a lower shelf, which provides both structural discipline and an additional display surface.

The marriage of exotic wood veneers with polished brass was one of the defining gestures of French decorative furniture in the 1970s, a decade in which the country’s leading furniture makers drew simultaneously on the classical tradition and the bold geometric forms of modernism. The use of burr walnut — a prized veneer for its dramatic figuring, which gives each piece a unique and irreproducible pattern — alongside precision-worked brass demonstrates the level of craft investment typical of luxury French workshop production of the period. Tables of this octagonal format, popularised by both named designers and talented anonymous craftsmen, have become emblematic of the era’s domestic aesthetic.

In very good condition consistent with age, with the burr walnut retaining a beautiful depth of colour and the brass presenting a fine golden patina. Minor surface wear commensurate with five decades of use. An object of genuine decorative quality, versatile enough to function as a coffee table in a living room or as a low display table in a study or entrance hall.
