Large Two-Tier Chrome Coffee Table, Clear & Black Glass Shelves, French Work circa 1970

This large and architecturally imposing coffee table is a confident expression of French design modernism at the height of the 1970s, a period that embraced chrome as the defining luxury material of the contemporary interior. The generous rectangular form — measuring over 123 centimetres in length — is supported on a chrome framework whose curved end supports introduce an elegant organic element into what might otherwise have been an entirely rectilinear composition.

The two-tier arrangement plays a studied chromatic counterpoint: the upper shelf in clear transparent glass allows visual access through the table, while the lower shelf in black lacquered glass provides both visual weight and a dramatic tonal contrast with the polished chrome.
