PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A commanding statement piece in the French organic modernist tradition, this large circular coffee table is entirely sheathed in tightly coiled natural rope over a wooden frame — the broad round top surface wound in concentric spirals that radiate outward from a central point, while the substantial pedestal base is wrapped in a close basket-weave pattern that gives it the appearance of a monolithic woven column. The contrast between the swirling geometry of the top and the structured texture of the base creates a visual dynamism typical of the finest pieces in the Audoux-Minet manner.
Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet established their collaborative practice in Paris in the 1930s, creating furniture and lighting that translated maritime rope-work into refined domestic objects. Their vocabulary — natural fibers, organic forms, honest materiality — proved enormously influential in France from the 1950s through the 1970s, inspiring a generation of craftsmen and small workshops to explore similar techniques in pieces such as this. The rich, warm tonality of the natural fiber, oscillating between honey and deep amber, brings an earthy sensuality to the form.
At 112 cm in diameter and 49.5 cm in height, this is a generously scaled table that reads as a sculptural object in its own right, capable of anchoring a large seating group with authority. Its low profile and circular silhouette integrate effortlessly with both period rattan and wicker ensembles and with more contemporary interior schemes seeking warmth and textural contrast.
In very good vintage condition, with the minor patina consistent with age and use. A rare single example complementing the pairs of such tables that occasionally come to market.
