Brass & Smoked Glass Coffee Table with Two Nesting Side Tables, France circa 1970

This refined ensemble comprising a coffee table and two matching nesting side tables speaks to the confident classicism of French decorative arts circa 1970, drawing on a neoclassical vocabulary while expressing it in materials very much of their time. The rectangular main table is framed in warm golden brass with a distinctive studded border edge, the smoked glass top resting within the frame to create a lustrous, semi-transparent surface that plays beautifully against the richness of the metal.

The brass framework is supported on four elegant reeded column legs — a motif with deep roots in the French classical tradition, here rendered in a refined and attenuated form that recalls the work of the great Parisian maisons of the mid-twentieth century. The same vocabulary of materials and form is carried through into the two smaller nesting tables, which slide neatly beneath the central piece and can be deployed as independent side or end tables when required.
