PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
An elegant neoclassical coffee table of the Directoire and Empire tradition, bearing the signature of M. Hirch, a distinguished Parisian furniture maker whose work exemplifies the high craft standards of French decorative furnishing in the first half of the twentieth century.
The rectangular top is fitted with a clear mirror panel within a carved and gilt frame of rope-twist profile — a refined neoclassical detail. The apron below continues the gilt carved decoration with acanthus leaf and laurel motifs against a warm patinated mahogany ground. The four scrolled legs, curved in the sabre manner, carry finely carved and gilt foliate ornament at their shoulders. They are united by an X-shaped stretcher with a decorative gilt palmette centrepiece.
The piece bears the handwritten signature “m Hirch” to the underside, confirming its authorship. The combination of dark patinated wood and gilt carved detail is characteristic of the Directoire revival taste that flourished in French furniture workshops of the 1930s and 1940s.
A refined and well-preserved piece, signed and in excellent original condition throughout.
