PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This refined coffee table, dating from France around 1950, belongs to a sophisticated tradition of furniture-making in which the junction between structural elements is treated not as a problem to be concealed but as an opportunity for decorative expression. Here, the junctions between the chrome tubular rails and the glass-bearing supports are wrapped in folded tabs of dark brown saddle leather, each secured by a polished chrome dome stud — a detail that gives the table its defining character and connects it to the tradition of high-quality French leather goods and the work of designers such as Jacques Adnet.
The frame consists of polished chrome tubular rails of generous diameter, their reflective surfaces forming an elegant contrast to the matte warmth of the leather fittings. The table carries two tiers of smoked glass, whose bronze-grey tint absorbs light and lends the piece a sense of depth and gravitas that would be absent with clear glass. The overall silhouette is low and horizontal — at just 37.5 cm in height, the table sits close to the floor in the manner favoured by decorators of the period for salons de réception and intimate seating arrangements.
The leather tabs are the table’s defining feature: cut and folded with the precision of a saddle-maker, they grip the chrome rails firmly while the dome screws’ curved surfaces echo the tubular form of the rails themselves. The dark brown leather deepens with age and handling, developing a patina that is itself a record of the object’s history.
At 120 × 69 cm in plan, this is a generous piece that anchors a seating group without overwhelming it. The condition is very good: the chrome bright, the leather supple, and both smoked glass shelves intact. It is a piece of considerable material distinction.
