PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This fireplace screen combines a frame of silvered metal with a fine wire mesh infill to produce an object that is at once functional and rigorously elegant. The silvered surface — cool, luminous, and reflective — creates a dialogue with the warm tones of a burning hearth that is quite different in character from the more familiar effect of polished brass. Where gilt metal flatters the fire with warmth, silvered metal frames it with a deliberate distance, transforming the glow of embers into something more formal, more considered, and in its own way more refined. The proportions are well-judged: at 52 centimetres wide and 56 centimetres tall, the screen fills a fireplace opening without overwhelming it.
The preference for silver tones in French decorative metalwork of the 1960s and 1970s reflects a broader shift in taste that accompanied the mid-century turn toward cooler, more minimal interiors. While the rococo warmth of gilded bronze had dominated the grands appartements of earlier centuries, the post-war interior increasingly sought contrast and restraint. Silvered metal — whether through true silver plating, chromium-plating, or the application of silvered lacquers — offered a way to maintain the material presence and luxurious associations of precious metalwork while adapting them to a more contemporary sensibility. A silvered screen is to the modern fireplace what a gilt one was to the boiserie-lined salon of the Ancien Régime.
The fireplace screen has its origins in the practical need to protect the room from sparks while also shielding seated occupants from the direct heat of the fire. Over the centuries it evolved from a simple functional object into one of the most carefully designed elements of the domestic interior, and in the French tradition it was accorded the same attention to craft and material that distinguished the best furniture and lighting of any period. The wire mesh infill, woven with precision, performs this protective function while allowing heat and light to radiate with minimal obstruction.
In fine condition, the silvered finish well preserved. This screen would complement a wide range of interior styles, from the coolly architectural to the more decorated, wherever a note of metallic precision is desired. Width: 52 cm. Height: 56 cm. Depth: 26 cm.
