PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This three-panel folding fireplace screen is an accomplished example of the elegant decorative objects that French studios produced for the luxury interiors market during the 1970s. The screen is composed of three equal glass panels, each set within a polished brass frame of clean rectangular profile with gently rounded upper corners — a form of discreet refinement that avoids both the severity of the purely geometric and the excess of the decorative. The panels are joined by brass hinges that allow the screen to be deployed in a shallow arc or folded flat for storage.

The glass itself is the object’s most arresting feature: a deep grey-green tint that absorbs light with a quiet intensity, giving the surface an almost mineral quality. Depending on the ambient light, the glass can appear variously as sage green, deep teal, or near-black — a chromatic variability that animates the piece throughout the day. This tinted glass was a material of great sophistication in the 1970s, employed selectively by designers and decorators who wished to introduce depth and colour into interiors without the weight of solid materials.

The polished brass framing provides the necessary counterpoint to the cool translucency of the glass: its warm golden tone, precisely mitred at the corners and given a high burnished polish, frames each panel with a clarity and finish that speaks to the quality of the manufacture. The brass is present without dominating, allowing the glass to remain the principal protagonist while lending the ensemble its sense of material luxury.

At 53.5 cm wide by 57 cm high, this screen is well proportioned for use before a medium-sized fireplace. Its combination of tinted glass and polished brass — materials both associated with the highest register of French interior decoration of its period — makes it a distinguished and desirable object for any setting.
