PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This cast iron fireback, designed by F. Guillebert as a registered model (« Modèle Déposé ») for the Parisian maker Stern, is a distinguished example of the modernist approach to traditional fireplace decoration. In place of the heraldic motifs, pastoral scenes and allegorical figures that characterise the classical fireback tradition, Guillebert has created a bold geometric composition in low relief: a work that is at once functional — reflecting heat back into the room and protecting the rear wall of the fireplace — and a piece of considered sculptural design.

Stern was one of the leading Parisian specialists in fireplace furniture and accessories throughout the twentieth century, known for the quality of their production and for commissioning designs from accomplished artists and craftsmen. A signed, registered-design fireback such as this represents the top tier of their output: a piece conceived not merely as a utilitarian object but as a work of decorative art in its own right. The fact that the design was registered underlines its status as an original creative work.

Cast iron lends itself superbly to the modernist geometric vocabulary: its density and surface texture give the relief a physical presence that would be impossible to achieve in a lighter material, and the slight roughness of the cast surface gives the geometric forms a material richness beyond their apparent simplicity. Measuring 50 centimetres in width and 44 in height with a depth of only 3.5 centimetres, the fireback is well proportioned for a standard fireplace opening.

A signed and documented piece of French modernist decorative design, by a maker of the highest reputation. In good vintage condition consistent with age and use. Dimensions: 50 × 3.5 × 44 cm.
