Cast Iron Fireback Depicting Diana, Goddess of the Hunt on her Chariot, French Work, Circa 1900

This magnificent cast iron fireback is a superb example of the tradition of mythological relief casting that has adorned French fireplaces since the Renaissance. Produced circa 1900, the piece depicts Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, triumphantly mounted on her chariot and drawn by her celebrated hunting hounds. The composition is rendered with a vigour and narrative energy worthy of the great relief casters of earlier centuries, the dynamic scene of the goddess in full stride conveying the exhilaration of the hunt and the divine authority of its presiding deity. Firebacks have been produced in France since at least the fifteenth century, when foundries in the forested regions of Normandy, the Ardennes, and the Berry began casting large decorative plates to line the backs of fireplaces, simultaneously protecting the masonry and reflecting warmth into the room.
