PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This impressive cast iron fireback presents a boldly stylised owl in high relief against a textured ground, a work of post-war French decorative art executed with confident sculptural authority. Signed by the artist Lucas and bearing the mark of the prestigious Stern foundry — the Parisian atelier whose stamps also appear on celebrated firebacks by Quellier and other leading mid-century French sculptors — the piece exemplifies the tradition of the fireback as a vehicle for artistic expression, a tradition that flourished in France from the Renaissance through the twentieth century.
The owl is depicted frontally with wings outstretched, its feathers rendered in precisely articulated layers of relief that create a rich play of light and shadow across the surface of the raw iron. The composition has a distinctly heraldic quality: the bird is centred and symmetrical, occupying the full height of the panel with the authority of a blazon. The stylisation is consistent with the aesthetic sensibilities of the 1960s and 70s, drawing on both the graphic directness of contemporary print culture and the long tradition of owl imagery in European symbolism — wisdom, nocturnal mystery, and the domestic hearth all converging in a single powerful motif.
The Stern foundry was the most important cast iron atelier serving French fine art and decorative production in the twentieth century, providing the technical infrastructure for a generation of sculptors who wished to work in this most demanding of materials. Its stamps are a mark of quality and seriousness; this fireback, with its crisp detailing and fine surface texture, demonstrates casting carried out at the highest standard.
At 66 × 57.5 centimetres, the fireback is of generous proportions, suited to a substantial fireplace opening. The strength of its graphic composition and the rarity of a signed example from this period make it a compelling acquisition for collectors of both decorative ironwork and post-war French sculpture.
