PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The owl has been a symbol of wisdom, nocturnal vigilance, and the mysteries of the natural world in European iconography since classical antiquity. Associated with Athena and the Minervan tradition, the owl appears across coats of arms, architectural decoration, and the applied arts with consistent frequency — particularly at moments when the classical tradition intersects with a naturalist appreciation of the animal world. This large cast iron fireback presents the owl at its most commanding: full-frontal, wings spread symmetrically in a heraldic display, the facial disc rendered with precision, the layered featherwork of wings and body cast with remarkable detail.

The relief work shows high foundry skill. The feathers are individually articulated across the wings and body, creating a surface of considerable textural richness that will shift and animate dramatically in firelight. The owl’s large forward-facing eyes — characteristic of the bird’s unique binocular vision adapted for nocturnal hunting — are given special emphasis in the composition, lending the piece an almost confrontational presence. The format, frontal display on a rectangular plate, approaches the language of heraldic blazon, as if the owl might take its place upon an escutcheon.

The signature Lucas and the stamp of the Fonderie Stern connect this fireback to the distinguished network of post-war French artists who collaborated with that Parisian foundry in producing a series of artist-designed firebacks that raised the genre to the level of fine decorative art. The series includes signed works by Raina, Quellier, and others — each contributing a distinctive subject and pictorial language to the same medium and format. Lucas’s owl, with its clarity of image and investment in naturalist observation, is among the most satisfying contributions to that series.

At 67 cm wide and 59 cm tall, a generously scaled piece suited to a principal fireplace. In excellent condition, the relief crisp, the signature and foundry stamp clearly legible.
