PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Cast in low relief across a substantial iron ground, this fireback presents an allegorical nude female figure bearing a scythe and a sheaf of wheat — a subject drawn from the classical iconography of Ceres, goddess of the harvest, here reinterpreted with the bold, simplified modelling of French modernist sculpture. The composition achieves a dynamic energy through the interplay of the figure’s curving posture and the angular geometry of the scythe and grain stalks.
The piece bears the stamp of the Stern foundry, the distinguished Parisian ironwork establishment whose production spanned architectural hardware, artistic editions, and fine fireplace accessories from the late nineteenth century through the post-war decades. The work is further signed by the sculptor, identified as Quellier, whose confident draughtsmanship is evident in the quality of the relief carving and the expressive treatment of the female form.
French cast iron firebacks of this type, produced as limited artistic editions rather than standard commercial pieces, occupied a distinct place in the luxury interior market of the mid-twentieth century. The present fireback, with its accomplished figure composition and prestigious foundry provenance, is a notable example of this tradition, related to similar allegorical subjects produced by the Stern atelier during the same period.
