PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This striking cast iron fireback is the work of the French editor Stern, celebrated for its production of decorative cast iron objects of artistic merit. Conceived in the modernist idiom and dating from around 1970, the piece presents a low-relief figural composition of bold, expressive character: Adam and Eve are rendered with simplified, almost primitive forms, their bodies intertwined with the serpent as the fateful apple passes between them.

The design draws on a long tradition of narrative firebacks—used since the Renaissance to protect masonry chimneys from heat while filling the hearth with images of devotion, mythology, or allegory. Here, the ancient subject of the Fall of Man has been reinterpreted through a Mid-Century Modern lens, the figurative modelling reduced to elemental shapes and fluid contours that recall the monumental simplicity of Jean Arp or Henri-Georges Adam.

Cast in fine grey iron with a textured surface finish characteristic of Stern’s production, the fireback retains an excellent depth of relief. The signature and editor’s mark of Stern—an important guarantor of quality in French decorative ironwork—are present, adding both provenance and collectibility.

A rare signed example at the intersection of functional fireside accessory and editioned sculptural artwork. Suitable for installation in a working hearth or for display as a collector’s piece.
