PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This ice bucket is a beautifully resolved object in which three materials — chrome, black leather and natural rope — are brought together in a combination that perfectly expresses the refined modernist sensibility of mid-20th century French decorative art. The cylindrical body is wrapped in a dense winding of natural tawny rope, bounded at top and bottom by smooth black leather bands. A polished chrome ring and hinged circular lid complete the form, the cool brilliance of the metal setting off the organic warmth of rope and leather to striking effect.
The aesthetic is unmistakably in the tradition of Jacques Adnet (1900–1984), the Parisian decorator who became the defining figure of French luxury interior design in the 1940s and 1950s. Adnet's signature use of stitched leather, rope and brass or chrome — in his lamps, tables and accessories for the Compagnie des Arts Français and subsequently in his own name — established a vocabulary of warm, tactile modernism that was enormously influential. This piece, with its identical material palette, is either from his workshop or from the generation of Parisian ateliers that fully absorbed his aesthetic.
The hinged chrome lid, secured with clip clasps, reveals a chrome-lined interior well suited to holding ice for the service of wine or spirits at table. The combination of an insulating outer layer — rope has natural thermal properties — and a hygienic chrome interior is both practical and elegant, reflecting the attention to function that characterised the best French decorative design of the period.
With equal width and depth of 20 cm and a height of 20.5 cm, this ice bucket has an almost cubic solidity and presence on the table. An object of quiet confidence that serves its purpose beautifully while contributing to the aesthetic of any well-considered interior.
