PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This ice bucket takes the form of a silver-plated bell pepper, its body modelled with the characteristic lobed form, dimpled crown, and curled stalk of the fully ripened vegetable. The upper portion of the body, including the crown and stalk, forms the removable lid; the lower portion serves as the ice receptacle. The entire surface is polished to a high, reflective silver-plate finish, giving the piece a distinctly sculptural presence. At 7.9 × 7.9 × 13 cm, it is proportioned for individual service — a personal ice bucket or condiment container — as much as for decorative display.

The tradition of trompe-l’œil vegetable and fruit forms in French silver and silver-plate is an ancient and distinguished one, rooted in the naturalistic confectionery sculptures served at Renaissance and Baroque banquets. By the mid-twentieth century, this tradition had been cheerfully democratised: French manufacturers produced a succession of table accessories in the forms of artichokes, tomatoes, aubergines, pumpkins, and peppers, combining fine silver-plating technique with an aesthetic pleasure in witty, naturalistic forms. This bell pepper belongs to that charming lineage.

The 1960s and 1970s were a particularly fertile period for such decorative conceits in French table ware, as a generation of consumers and designers rediscovered the pleasures of trompe-l’œil naturalism within a broadly modernist decorative vocabulary. The bell pepper form, with its rounded sculptural lobes and bright seasonal associations, translated particularly well into silver: the polished metal replaces the vegetable’s natural gloss, and the form reads at once as a precise botanical observation and as an exercise in abstract sculptural form.

The piece is in very good condition, the silver plate presenting a warm, lustrous finish. Dimensions: 7.9 × 7.9 × 13 cm.
