PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This pumpkin-form ice bucket unites the decorative naturalism of the nineteenth-century French silversmith’s tradition with the whimsical spirit that animated so much French table ware of the 1960s and 1970s. The body is modelled as a compact, perfectly proportioned pumpkin, its lobed surface polished to a high silver-plate lustre. The removable lid is surmounted by a sculptural stem and vine leaves rendered in gilt brass, their warm golden tone providing a deliberately rustic counterpoint to the cool precision of the silver body. The overall effect is one of studied pastoral elegance — at once practical and festive.

The use of two-metal construction — silver-plated base metal for the body and gilt brass for the decorative botanical elements — is a hallmark of the Gallia repertoire. Gallia, the mid-range silver-plating division of the Christofle group, was established in the nineteenth century to bring the quality and vocabulary of Christofle craftsmanship to a broader market. Its pieces combine rigorous manufacturing standards with decorative imagination, and this ice bucket exemplifies both qualities: the construction is solid and well-finished, while the design reveals a confident sense of wit and seasonal allusion.

The pumpkin motif carries rich iconographic associations in the French decorative tradition: associated with harvest, abundance, and the autumnal table, it appeared throughout the applied arts from the Renaissance onward, from faïence tureens to silver centrepieces. This ice bucket revives the motif in a thoroughly modern idiom — the simplified, almost stylised lobed form owes as much to postwar modernism as to historical precedent — while preserving its fundamental charm. It functions superbly at the table, practical in use and sculptural in its presence.

Marked Gallia and bearing a production number to the underside, confirming authenticity and provenance. The piece is in excellent condition, with crisp definition to the modelling, bright silver plate, and the gilt brass elements retaining their original warm finish. Dimensions: 14 × 14 × 13 cm.
