PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This ice bucket is a masterpiece of mid-century French lucite design: a perfect cube in deep burgundy tortoiseshell-effect plexiglass, its surface a swirling, layered pattern of dark wine-red and amber that gives it the warm depth of natural tortoiseshell without any of that material's fragility. The upper edge is bound in a fine chrome frame, which also supports the clear acrylic lid — a square plate with a circular aperture through which ice is accessed, lifted by a solid clear block handle. The combination of the opaque tortoiseshell body and the transparent lid creates a precise, architecturally resolved object in which each material performs its role with conviction.
The piece bears a small brass "P" plaque on the body — the maker's signature — confirming that this is a designed object rather than a generic production. French plexiglass and lucite accessories of the 1960s and 1970s occupied a distinctive position in the luxury market: materials that had been perceived as industrial were elevated by skilled designers and craftspeople into objects of genuine refinement, prized for their colour saturation, their visual lightness, and their resistance to the thermal shock of ice and cold liquids.
At 15 centimetres square and 19 centimetres tall, this bucket is sized for the cocktail table or bar trolley. Its cube geometry and warm palette — the burgundy of the body contrasting with the silvery chrome banding and the transparent lid — give it a visual presence that is both bold and elegant. It is equally suited to a modernist interior and to a more traditional setting where a touch of 1970s glamour is welcome.
A well-preserved and stylish example of French designer lucite accessories, this ice bucket demonstrates the period's ability to create objects that are luxurious without being heavy.
