Canton famille rose porcelain — produced in the workshops of Guangzhou (Canton) for the export market from the eighteenth century onwards — represents one of the great achievements of Chinese decorative art in the Western taste. Distinguished by its vibrant polychrome palette dominated by opaque rose-pink enamel, it presents a uniquely compelling visual world in which Chinese court life, exotic flora and symbolic fauna are combined in an endlessly inventive decorative programme. This fine plate is an excellent example of the genre at its most accomplished.

The painting is organised into alternating panels following the classic Rose Medallion formula: figural panels depicting animated court scenes with elegant ladies and attendants in richly embroidered robes set against architectural backgrounds, interspersed with botanical panels densely packed with flowers, butterflies and birds rendered with the assured touch of a skilled hand-painter. Between and around these reserves, the ground is covered in an intricate pattern of tendrils, insects and scattered blossoms that fills every available surface. The effect is one of extraordinary decorative abundance — the painting covering the entire interior with consistent intensity.

The plate is set into a scrollwork bronze display stand of French manufacture, a presentation device characteristic of the Orientalist collecting taste that flourished in nineteenth-century France. The stand frames the plate elegantly while allowing it to be displayed almost vertically, transforming it from a purely functional object into a work of decorative art for the cabinet or mantelpiece.

A handsome and characterful piece, the plate in good condition for its age and the bronze mount sound and stable.
