PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This exceptional piece represents the pinnacle of French neoclassical furniture-making in the nineteenth century. Conceived as a guéridon à pied central — a pedestal table supported on a single central column — it is constructed from richly figured mahogany with finely cast brass and bronze mounts throughout. The piece possesses the remarkable additional function of converting into a large dining table for twelve or more guests: the central pedestal is supplemented by four additional legs and a series of extensions, creating a surface of grand proportions while maintaining the visual coherence of the Louis XVI style. The bronze mounts — with their characteristic acanthus leaves, ribbon mouldings, and classical friezes — are of the highest quality, consistent with the work of the finest Parisian ébénistes of the period.

The tradition of convertible furniture in France has its roots in the ingenuity of the great eighteenth-century ébénistes who served the royal court. The capacity to transform a compact guéridon into a large dining table was a particularly prized feature in the great hôtels particuliers of Paris, where the same room might serve as a salon and a dining room depending on the occasion. Pieces of this type — large in scale, generously appointed with bronze mounts, and executed in the finest Cuban or San Domingan mahogany — were invariably commissions from the grandest clientele. Their survival in complete, functional condition is rare, and this example’s ability to serve its original dual purpose makes it exceptional.

Presented in very good antique condition, with the patina and minor wear consistent with its age and distinguished provenance. Diam. 170 cm × H. 78 cm.
