PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This rectangular planter in polished brass is conceived in the Neoclassical manner, its sides adorned with the classical ornamental vocabulary — fluted registers, garland motifs, foliate friezes and architectural mouldings — typical of the revival of Neoclassical taste in French decorative arts during the 1960s and 1970s. The warm gleam of the polished brass and the crispness of the ornamental detail make this an object of considerable decorative presence. The rectangular format, echoing the proportions of the ancient garden urn, is practical and elegant in equal measure.

The planter, or jardinière, holds a long and distinguished place in French decorative arts, from the grand marble garden urns of Versailles to the refined gilded bronze cachepots of the Empire period. The Neoclassical revival of the 1960s and 1970s brought a renewed appreciation for the formal clarity and historical resonance of this vocabulary. French craftsmen of the period produced planters and cachepots in brass, bronze and lacquered metals that adapted the repertoire of antique ornament — garlands, fluting, Greek key, acanthus — to the requirements of contemporary interior decoration, often for the grand apartments and luxury hotels of the era.

This planter is ideally suited for the display of indoor plants, cut flowers or topiary, and its handsome Neoclassical ornament ensures it remains equally beautiful when empty. It would make a distinguished addition to a hall, salon, library, conservatory or garden room, where its warm brass patina would introduce a note of historical elegance. A refined and versatile decorative object in the finest tradition of French applied arts.
