PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The faux-bamboo motif — the simulation, in cast metal, of the natural nodes and internodes of bamboo cane — belongs to one of the most persistent strands of French decorative taste: the fascination with China and Japan that had periodically energised French design since the reign of Louis XIV, and that found a vivid new expression in the exuberant chinoiserie of the Art Déco period. Maison Baguès, the great Parisian house known above all for its elaborately naturalistic bronze and brass lighting, brought to this tradition an exceptional technical sophistication: the faux-bamboo of their lamps, frames, and furniture pieces is not a casual simulation but a precision casting, each node and internode modelled with botanical accuracy and finished to a warm, lustrous patina.

This corner shelf, in the style of Baguès, translates the faux-bamboo vocabulary into a practical domestic form: three triangular mahogany shelves, graded in size, assembled within a framework of cast brass rods that mimic the jointed culms of bamboo. The result is an object that resolves an architectural problem — the corner — with a solution that is at once structurally logical and visually light. The contrast between the warm darkness of the mahogany shelves and the golden shimmer of the brass framework is characteristic of the finest French Art Déco production in this mode, and the compact proportions (35 × 25 × 52.5 cm) make it adaptable to a wide range of spaces without sacrificing presence.

Pieces in the Baguès manner, working in faux-bamboo brass, occupy a precise and recognisable position in the taxonomy of French Art Déco: they are simultaneously exotic and entirely French, Eastern in inspiration and Western in execution. Whether from the atelier of Baguès itself or from the skilled workshops that produced in the maison’s manner, these corner shelves represent some of the most charming and technically accomplished small-scale furniture of the period — objects that continue to animate any interior in which they are placed.
