PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A handsome Napoleon III-period sofa in ebonized wood, offered in structurally sound condition to be reupholstered at the discretion of the new owner — an opportunity to dress an exceptional frame in a fabric of one’s choosing. Dating to circa 1880, the piece falls within the final years of the Napoleon III aesthetic: a style that flourished under the Second Empire (1852–1870) and whose influence extended well into the Third Republic, as the demand for its richly decorative vocabulary showed no sign of abating.
The frame is executed in blackened wood — a treatment that achieved the visual effect of ebony at a fraction of the cost, and which became one of the defining characteristics of Napoleon III furniture, lending it its distinctly theatrical quality. The high, generous back (H. 40.94 in.) and broad seat (W. 70.87 in.) are typical of the period’s commitment to comfort as much as spectacle: these sofas were made to impress in a salon and to accommodate the voluminous fashions of the Second Empire.
The proportions (W. 70.87 × D. 33.27 × H. 40.94 in.) are commanding without being excessive, and the structural integrity of a well-made nineteenth-century piece is the ideal foundation for a new upholstery commission. The buyer may choose to restore it in a period-appropriate fabric — silk damask, velvet, or tapestry — or to dress it in a contemporary textile for a dialogue between old and new.
A distinguished acquisition for the collector or decorator, offered with the freedom to personalise.
