PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This elegant umbrella stand is fashioned in engraved brass, its surface enriched with interlacing ornamental decoration — a pattern of interwoven geometric and foliate bands characteristic of the late nineteenth-century taste for historic ornamental styles. The cylindrical body is worked with precision and skill, the engraved entrelacs conveying a refined handicraft quality typical of the best Parisian metalwork of the Belle Époque. The warm golden tone of the brass and the depth of the engraving give this piece a rich, jewelled quality.
The engraving of brass objects was a specialised craft in late nineteenth-century Paris, practised by bronziers and orfèvres whose workshops produced household objects of great decorative quality. The interlacing motif — entrelacs — has ancient roots in Celtic, Romanesque, and Moorish decorative traditions, and was revived with enthusiasm by nineteenth-century designers during the historicist period, when all historical ornamental vocabularies were drawn upon for furniture, metalwork, and decorative objects. Umbrella stands of this quality were displayed with pride in the bourgeois entrance hall as a mark of refined domestic taste.
Today this piece brings historical character and warm metallic beauty to any entrance hall, corridor, or study. Its compact size makes it suited to both urban apartments and country houses. It may serve its traditional purpose or be repurposed as a decorative vessel for tall dried plants, branches, or architectural objects. A distinguished example of French Belle Époque metalcraft.
