PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A warm-toned brass bas-relief depicting two figures in a flowing embrace, set within a precisely fitted black lacquered frame with silver inner moulding. The relief is of considerable depth, the rounded forms of the intertwined bodies casting well-defined shadows that animate the composition as the light changes throughout the day. The modelling is generous and assured — rounded heads, arching torsos and sinuous limbs resolved into a unified mass that fills the field with a sense of contained, intimate energy.
The stylistic vocabulary belongs to the tradition of French figurative sculpture in the modernist vein: the fluid, organic treatment of the human figure, the abstraction of anatomical detail in favour of formal flow, and the sensuous interplay of convex surface and receding void are characteristics shared with the decorative metalwork produced in France from the 1930s through to the early 1970s. The composition recalls, in particular, the recurring motif of the embracing or entwined figure that pervades French decorative sculpture of the post-war decades, from large-scale architectural reliefs to intimate household objects.
Mounted against a silver-grey ground and framed with strict elegance in black, the piece functions simultaneously as wall decoration and as a work of sculpture in the full sense — the relief projecting sufficiently from its background to assert a pronounced three-dimensional presence. The overall effect is both luxurious and restrained: the warm gleam of the polished brass complementing the austerity of the lacquered frame to produce an object of genuine distinction.
In very good condition, the brass retaining its warm golden tone with natural oxidation in the recessed areas that enhances the modelling and sense of depth. Overall framed dimensions: 56.5 cm wide by 67.5 cm tall, 2.5 cm in depth. An accomplished piece of French decorative sculpture, equally suited to a living room, study or entrance hall where it will reward prolonged attention.
