PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The island of Murano, situated in the Venetian lagoon barely a kilometre from the city that has defined luxury glassmaking for seven centuries, has been the centre of European glass production since 1291, when the Venetian Republic ordered all glassmakers to relocate there — ostensibly to reduce the risk of fire, but also to concentrate and protect its most precious trade secret. The techniques perfected on Murano — millefiori, filigrana, sommerso, and the virtuosic manipulation of hot glass into flowers, animals, and chandelier arms — remain without parallel in the history of the craft. By the 1960s and 1970s, a generation of Murano glassmakers was applying these ancestral skills to pieces of thoroughly modern sensibility, the baroque exuberance of the classical chandelier giving way to bolder forms, warmer colours, and a more sculptural relationship with light.

This eight-arm chandelier, in a warm amber-orange glass of characteristic Murano luminosity, belongs to the most confident production of that era. The colour — a deep amber edging towards orange, reminiscent of sunset light filtering through sea glass — is one of the most prized in the Murano palette, technically demanding to produce consistently and visually stunning when illuminated. Eight arms radiate from a central body with the assured generosity of proportion typical of the finest Venetian work, the whole measuring 72 centimetres in diameter and 50 centimetres in height.

Murano chandeliers of the 1970s occupy a distinct position in the history of Italian decorative arts: belonging neither entirely to the postwar modernist wave nor to the baroque tradition, they represent an assured synthesis of craft mastery and contemporary formal intelligence. This example, with its warm colour and generous proportions, would bring singular animation to any interior — the amber glass transforming artificial light into something approaching the warm, honey-toned luminosity of a southern evening.
