PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Elegantly resolved in gilt bronze, this six-light chandelier represents a refined example of the Louis XVI revival taste that flourished in France between the Belle Époque and the early years of the twentieth century. Six gracefully curved arms radiate from a central stem of classical proportions, each terminating in a candle cup of restrained profile. The ornamental vocabulary throughout — chased acanthus scrolls, husks and delicately reeded mouldings — is executed with the precision that characterises the best French ateliers of the period, uniting decorative richness with the structural discipline that defines the neoclassical aesthetic.

The Louis XVI style, which first flourished under the reign of the last Bourbon king in the 1770s and 1780s, found its most authoritative second life during the Third Republic, when a prosperous bourgeoisie furnished its Haussmannian apartments with references to the Ancien Régime’s aesthetic zenith. The period circa 1900–1920 saw Parisian bronze foundries — many descended from the great guild ateliers of the eighteenth century — producing lighting in the Louis XVI manner of exceptional technical quality. These pieces quoted the original repertoire faithfully: straight-sided candle cups, leafy festoons, pearl-beaded borders and a preference for fire-gilded or patinated bronze that aged beautifully over decades.

This chandelier presents in handsome condition, its bronze retaining the warm, toned surface characteristic of aged French metalwork. The six-arm configuration strikes a balance between intimacy and generosity, well suited to a dining room, library or salon of moderate scale. The circular footprint of 68.5 cm combined with a height of 76 cm gives the fixture satisfying visual weight without overpowering the space. An assured piece of Beaux-Arts decorative art, entirely faithful to the great tradition of French bronze chandelier-making.
