PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Combining the warmth of patinated bronze with the refractive brilliance of cut crystal, this six-arm chandelier in the Louis XV manner captures the essential duality of the French rococo: structural strength married to flickering, immaterial light. The bronze armature is formed in the characteristic scrolled fashion of the style, its branches curving outward in generous C-scrolls before each accepts a candle cup trimmed with crystal drops. The overall silhouette, spanning some 63 centimetres including the pendant crystals, is intimate yet opulent in the manner of an eighteenth-century salon de compagnie.

The Louis XV chandelier — with its bronze or ormolu frame hung with faceted glass or rock crystal drops — was one of the supreme inventions of the French decorative arts. Developed in the royal ateliers of the mid-eighteenth century, this type spread rapidly through the aristocratic and later bourgeois interior, culminating in the canonical form produced by the great Paris bronziers of the Second Empire and Belle Époque. Examples of circa 1900 such as this were produced by skilled French foundries working in the finest continuity of that tradition, their crystal drops hand-cut to maximise the play of candlelight or the earliest electric bulbs.

This chandelier presents in fine overall condition, the bronze casting showing the characteristic hand-finished quality of Belle Époque production, with its crystalline pendants intact and sparkling. The height of 79 cm combined with the 48.5 cm body width gives the fixture a satisfying vertical presence ideal for rooms with standard ceiling heights. It would bring its particular magic to a living room, dining room or bedroom, its crystals animating the light with the shimmer characteristic of French historical decorative art.
