PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Champagne: the word announces a specific optical programme. In daylight, the pale amber glass of these two Murano chandeliers reads as nearly colourless — a cool, luminous transparency that allows the architecture of the room to remain primary. Switch on the light and the transformation is immediate: the glass warms to a deep gold, each arm and leaf and blown element catching and amplifying the source within, filling the surrounding space with a honeyed radiance that has no equivalent in colourless or strongly coloured glass. This is the particular sophistication of the champagne palette, and the reason the Murano maestri of the 1970s returned to it again and again for their most refined commissions.
The island of Murano, lying in the Venetian Lagoon barely a kilometre from the city’s northern shore, has been the centre of the world’s most demanding glass tradition since 1291, when the Republic of Venice ordered its furnaces transferred there from the city itself. By the late twentieth century, the great houses of the island — Barovier & Toso, Seguso Viro, Venini among them — had evolved a Mid-Century idiom that simplified the chandelier’s historic Baroque armature without losing its essential character: the cascade of glass elements, the balance of arms, the central column from which all else descends. This pair is a product of that evolution — its profile lower and broader than a traditional Venetian chandelier, its ornament restrained, its craftsmanship impeccable.
Pairs of matching chandeliers in Murano glass are among the most sought-after objects in the antiques market: the rarity of two identical pieces surviving together compounds the desirability of each. Suited to a formal dining room, a double salon or a galleried entrance hall where they can be suspended en regard, these chandeliers offer a collector the rare pleasure of buying complete. Each measures 76 cm in diameter and 50 cm in height. In excellent condition, wired for modern use.
