PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This cast iron fireback is a striking example of the post-war French modernist aesthetic applied to the most ancient of domestic ironwork forms. The composition is boldly abstract: angular raised lines sweep across the textured surface in dynamic diagonal arrangements that strongly evoke birds in flight or aerodynamic forms cutting through space — a vocabulary rooted in the abstract naturalism that characterized French decorative art in the years immediately following the Liberation.
The relief is executed with technical confidence: the lines are clean and precisely cast, the depth of relief creating strong shadow contrasts that shift dramatically in the flickering light of a fire. The plate — 60 cm wide by 50 cm tall, just 3.5 cm thick — is appropriately scaled for a standard residential fireplace, its dimensions calibrated for both aesthetic presence and effective heat reflection. The fine sandy texture of the cast iron background offers a subtle foil to the bold geometry of the relief.
The fireback is signed and attributed to the Fonderie Stern, the Parisian foundry whose name appears on a number of distinguished post-war artistic firebacks in the French tradition, including signed works by Raina and Quellier. Stern was among the leading foundries supplying the Parisian interior market with artist-designed firebacks throughout the 1940s–1970s, working with sculptors and graphic artists to translate contemporary aesthetic languages into the durable medium of cast iron. The signature on this example — partially legible, possibly reading “G. Lecoff” — awaits definitive identification, but does not diminish the quality of the work.
A distinguished example of the artistic fireback in the modernist manner: rigorous, dynamic, and eloquent in its chosen medium.
