PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This cast iron fireback presents a lyrical reclining nude in low relief against a raw iron ground, a work of refined figurative sensibility signed by Alain Bonnefoit (born 1937), one of the most elegant painters and draughtsmen of the female figure in twentieth-century French art. Known for his graceful, flowing depictions of women in intimate, light-filled compositions — works that place him in the tradition of Renoir, Matisse, and Bonnard while establishing a distinctive contemporary voice — Bonnefoit here brings his characteristic sensibility to the demanding medium of cast iron, producing a fireback of genuine artistic distinction.
The figure is rendered with the same attentiveness to contour and pose that characterises Bonnefoit’s paintings and prints: the body reads as a continuous flowing line, the relief modelled with sensitivity to the interplay of light across the dark iron surface. The raw texture of the cast iron becomes, in the context of this work, an atmospheric ground that recalls the tonal drawing techniques Bonnefoit employs on paper — charcoal, lithographic crayon, mezzotint — where form emerges gradually from a dark field into light. Against the glow of a fire, this effect would be heightened to a remarkable degree.
At 70 × 53 centimetres, the fireback is of substantial proportions, appropriate to a large fireplace opening. The signed nature of the work distinguishes it from the production pieces that constitute the majority of cast iron firebacks on the market, placing it in a separate category as a signed original by a known artist — a distinction that confers both documentary and aesthetic value in the context of post-war French figurative art.
Alain Bonnefoit is represented in numerous public and private collections across France and internationally, and his works are regularly offered at the major auction houses. This fireback represents a unique crossover between his graphic and sculptural practice and the tradition of decorative ironwork, making it a compelling acquisition both for collectors of his work and for collectors of fine cast iron.
