PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The brass lantern in the Oriental tradition is one of the great achievements of Islamic decorative art: a form in which the practical demands of illumination and the speculative ambitions of geometric ornament converge in a single object. The craftsman who made this late nineteenth-century example commanded a geometry of piercing — arabesques, star polygons, interlocking lattices — that filters candlelight into a tracery of shadows on the surrounding walls, transforming any interior into something approaching the inner court of a Mamluk palace or a Damascene merchant’s reception room. At 82.5 centimetres in height and 57 in diameter, it is a piece of imposing scale.

The body is worked in cast and repoussé brass with a precision that identifies this as the product of a specialist atelier — most likely from Egypt, Syria or Morocco, where the craft of fanal-making had been transmitted through generations of metalworkers whose guilds maintained strict standards of execution. The surface treatment reveals the quality of the alloy and the confidence of the chasing. The lantern’s openwork panels are set within a structural cage of solid ribs, each junction finished with a knop or collar that reinforces the composition while adding further visual incident.

When the great French collectors of the Second Empire and the early Third Republic furnished their Moorish smoking rooms and orientalist salons, pieces of this scale and quality were among the most sought-after acquisitions — transported from the souks of Cairo, Damascus and Fez, or commissioned through the Parisian marchands specialising in arts de l’Orient. Today this lantern remains what it always was: an object of extraordinary craft, suited to a contemporary interior that can accommodate its presence and deserves its light.
