PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

At thirty-eight centimetres wide, ninety-eight centimetres deep including bracket, and one hundred and eleven centimetres in height, these are exterior lanterns conceived for a building of considerable architectural ambition. Their scale alone — each arm extending nearly a metre from the wall to carry the lantern body at the outer extremity — indicates a façade of corresponding dimension: the entrance gate of a château, the forecourt of a manor house, the street front of a grand hôtel particulier, or a public building in the classical tradition. Fixed to stone or rendered masonry, a pair of lanterns of this kind defines the threshold of a property and declares its character from the street.

The tradition of French exterior ironwork — ferronnerie de façade — is among the most demanding in the decorative arts. Unlike interior metalwork, exterior pieces must contend with wind, rain, and temperature variation, and must therefore be constructed with structural integrity sufficient to last decades while retaining the aesthetic refinement that befits their architectural context. French craftsmen of the mid-twentieth century excelled at this combination: the forged steel of their brackets and lantern bodies was designed to weather gracefully, its surface acquiring the character that only outdoor exposure over time can give. This pair, dating from circa 1950, represents the last generation of exterior lanterns made with pre-industrial craft methods.

A pair of exterior lanterns of this scale and quality — available together, in original condition — is an exceptional rarity. Individual examples surface occasionally, but matched pairs in good condition are uncommon; exterior pieces have typically suffered from decades of exposure, and many have been lost to replacement or modernisation. These lanterns, retaining their structural integrity and original metalwork, represent both a practical lighting solution for a grand entrance and a piece of architectural heritage in their own right.
