PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This well-preserved set of six stackable chairs, produced by the German maker Karl Klipper circa 1970, exemplifies the rationalist design philosophy that dominated Central European furniture production in the postwar decades. The combination of solid pine for the frame with a thermoformed wood seat and back reflects the sophisticated material thinking of German furniture design in this period: the recognition that industrial processes—here, the thermoforming of wood under heat and pressure—could produce forms of ergonomic intelligence and aesthetic coherence unavailable to traditional woodworking alone.
Each chair presents clean, unornamented lines in the modernist tradition, its form reduced to structural essentials without sacrificing comfort or visual character. The pine frame, warm and natural in tone, contrasts agreeably with the smooth, slightly curved thermoformed seat and back, creating a dialogue between craft tradition and industrial production that characterised the best German design of the 1960s and 1970s. The stackable feature speaks to the functional intelligence embedded in the design: a practical virtue that enhances rather than diminishes the chair’s formal appeal.
Sets of six in this tradition are particularly sought after, offering the practical utility of a complete dining service alongside the coherence of a unified design. As a collection, these chairs benefit from the cumulative effect of repetition, their clean geometry acquiring an almost architectural presence when grouped around a table.
A functional and well-designed set of six in good vintage condition. W. 50.5 × D. 51 × H. 80.5 cm each.
